Elastomer Characteristics
Latex and Natural Rubber
Provides excellent electrical, impact, abrasion, and tear resistance. Typical properties are 38 Durometer shore "A", 800% elongation, 4000 psi tensile strength.
Pure Gum Rubber
This rubber provides excellent electrical and abrasion resistance, and also provides good resistance to impact, tear, and oxidation.
Buna-N (Nitrile)
Provides excellent oil resistance, and good protection from impact, abrasion, and oxidation.
SBR (Styrene-Butadiene Rubber)
This material provides excellent impact resistance, and very good abrasion resistance. It also provides good electrical and oxidation resistance.
Neoprene
This rubber provides excellent abrasion and oxidation resistance, and good oil, electrical, flame, impact, tear, and weather resistance. Typical properties are 50 Durometer shore "A", 4-500% elongation, 2600 psi tensile strength.
Epichlorohydrin (ECH)
Features excellent resistance to oils and gasoline as well as good resistance to electricity, abrasion, weather, ozone, and oxidation.
Butyl
Provides excellent resistance to oxidation and electricity, and good resistance to ozone, abrasion and tearing.
EPDM
Provides excellent protection from degradation from sunlight, ozone, and electricity. It also provides good resistance to impact, abrasion, and tearing.
Hypalon
Perfect for outdoor applications, Hypalon features excellent resistance to weather, oxidation, ozone, abrasion. Also provides good oil, acid, and flame resistance.
Silicone
Provides excellent weather, oxidation, and ozone resistance; also provides good electrical resistance.
Polyurethane
This lightweight, smooth-finish material has the unique ability to be softer than a rubber band, or harder than a table top. It resists abrasion, breakage on impact, tearing, water, oxidation, ozone, and many solvents. Compared to other elastomers, polyurethane has better cut, tear, and abrasion resistance. Compared to plastics, it is nonbrittle, and has the unique ability to return to its original shape. It is extremely stable when exposed to temperature changes, but it is not recommended for prolonged contact with steam. Typical properties of polyurethane:

Santoprene
This advanced elastomer combines the performance characteristics of vulcanized rubber and thermoplastic to produce a material with excellent weather resistance and good chemical resistance.
Vinyl
This rubber provides good resistance to oil, impact, weather, oxidation, and ozone.
Viton
This high-performance elastomer provides excellent resistance to fuel, oil, chemicals, and solvents at high temperatures. Also provides excellent resistance to oxidation and ozone.
